Nashville cats and private lessons

Zoro has relocated to Nashville, TN from Los Angeles. For those seeking private lessons, that means you can either catch him on the road (see the events page), or, when in Nashville, contact him at 818-257-2414. Zoro will be teaching exclusively at Forks Drum Closet, the top drum store in the region.

If you would like to learn with the Minister of Groove when he's on the road, simply call the number abovle or drop Z a line to arrange a lesson or master class when he's in your town.

Here's what students just like you have had to say about learning with Zoro:

“A few years back, I made the decision to make drumming a full-time career, but I realized that I needed the guidance and expertise of a working professional in order to answer the many questions that I had on how to go about it. Zoro has proven to be an absolute Godsend by providing me with an invaluable amount of information and advice that has improved my drumming exponentially, propelled my career forward and even made me a better person. Thanks to Z’s input, I have literally changed the way that I approach playing the drums, both in terms of technique as well as the practical application of basic drumming fundamentals and written drum texts. Not only that, but my meter, dynamics, musicality, sight-reading and listening abilities are much improved as well. This has increased my confidence and self-awareness as a player and has helped me to find my “voice” as a drummer. Z and I have spent many sessions discussing drumming as a career path with special emphasis on financial and tax issues and finding better ways to market one’s abilities. I feel that I am much more prepared to deal with the opportunities and challenges that will come my way. As if that weren’t enough, Z has also taken a special interest in my development as a person. We’ve discussed goals and goal setting, fulfilling your life’s purpose, realizing your full potential, balancing family life with career and diet/health issues. The drumming community routinely recognizes Zoro for his unmatched ability, inimitable style and his continuing commitment to education. I’ve come to know the person behind it all and I’m better because of it. Drumming legend, world-class musician, recording artist, clinician, author, educator, mentor and friend – I’m proud to know them all. Z you are the best!” – Phil

"I 've been taking lessons from Zoro periodically for several years, and from each lesson I've come away with a better understanding of particular feels, and new ideas for groove variations which work their way into my playing (with a little practice). In addition to the standard lessons, we've also had a few sessions in which we simply discuss the music industry and various approaches to making a career in music. Fortunately, with all the success and notoriety Zoro has garnered, he's never displayed the least bit of ego or attitude. He's very easy-going, approachable and spiritual, and I have no doubt that has contributed to his successes. Thanks, Z!" - Steve

"I just wanted to say thank you so very much for the excellent lesson and clinic in Kitchener, Ontario on Tuesday May 14th. I enjoyed very much your laid back approach in the lesson, and the time exercises you gave me were fantastic. I am looking forward to practising that stuff for a long time."- Dale

"… Well, I don’t know. Should I take a lesson with this guy Zoro or hmmm, I don’t know…he did answer my e-mail by calling. Sounded understanding. I’m on the fence, uncertain. Should I or not!

"February 2001, I decided. I screwed up my courage and drove for almost an hour to Zoro’s house for a lesson. I’ve been going back at least every two weeks. Why you may ask? Quite simple – he knows his stuff. He is a true professional. He knows the basics through the complex. Wherever YOU as the student want to go, he takes you.

"There is much more to it however. Remember how I said I had to screw up my courage. I’m now 46 years old. Never performed on the drums with a group, live or otherwise. Always SUPER nervous about that. Who knows why? Anyway, I learned to walk by following my brother around as he banged on a tin drum! I’ve always loved the drums and wanted to play. I bought a set in 1978 and taught myself what I could. But music and drums are a language. Imagine trying to write a novel when you only know ten words and some punctuation! No way!

"Zoro has been teaching me the language of the drums. Reading, listening, playing. They form the basis. Zoro has the attendant skills required, but much more importantly, he has the soul. He loves what he does; he is exuberant. He DOES NOT chastise or ridicule or belittle. His way is not to grind you; his way is to motivate you.

"Okay, let’s just put this simply – Zoro is one HELLUVA teacher. He also has become a good friend. Hell, he listens to me banging away every couple weeks." - Paul

"The number one greatest thing I have learned from taking drum lessons for the past 9 years whether it be from local teachers or pro players, is learning how to practice correctly. No other teacher emphasizes this better than Zoro. Learning that great lick or pattern is useless if one doesn't know when to use, where to use, when not to use it, and knowing how to pull every possibility from that pattern. Very few people I have encountered know how to teach and/or use this concept properly and thoroughly. Zoro does. Few players ,even on the pro circuit, play with the level of dynamics and touch that Zoro possesses. Zoro can show you how to approach this area as well. Zoro's 'down to earth' nature and extreme passion for his craft is addictive. One lesson with Zoro and you should be able to recognize the difference between a good teacher and a drum mastermind!" - Jusden

"It's good to know that your instructor actually cares to call and see how your doing. I am actually still drumming and wouldn't have it any other way. I couldn't thank you enough for helping me out with my tendinitis problem. Since you have helped me with my technique. I haven't had any problems with it. Thanks for everything Z. You are a great instructor and I would probably be hurting right now if it wasn't for your help." - Albert

"While (in Los Angeles), I made the time to visit my good friend Zoro. We worked on new drum techniques and great solo ideas. It is amazing to study with a pro like Z. We took a pattern as simple as a triplet and discovered an amazing number of applications to create cool, grooving, dynamic riffs and solos. I can NOT thank Z enough for his friendship as well as the time and effort he lends my way to help me improve as a musician and person. Z – you are da’ man!" - Jimmy

"My lesson studio recently hosted Zoro for a Master class on April 22nd, 2003. What an incredible impact this event has made in the lives of my drum students! Talk about my students being pumped up for their next lessons! Zoro tailored this class to the skill level of my students, ranging from beginner to those who have been playing for a few years. He established an immediate rapport with the participants and held their attention captive throughout the entire class. Zoro interjected his fun personality and humor into the session, making the two-hour plus class seem to fly by. I say "two-hour plus" because AFTER his teaching Zoro wowed the students by playing some songs, shared his philosophy about using the talents one has been given, helped award door prizes, and stayed to sign autographs until the last student left! This was an incredible event, and we would be honored to host him again next year! My students are still talking about the master class, and are already asking about the possibility of his return!"- Chuck
