Super Bad - Grooves That Make You Go Hmmm . . (exerpt)

The Commandments of R&B Drumming: A Comprehensive Guide to Soul, Funk and Hip Hop

32nd Note Bass Drum Patterns: The Workout Of Champions

The following patterns are intended to help you develop more facility in your bass drum foot, enabling you to place these embellishments into the groove at your musical discretion. They are not intended to be played constantly or else your bass drum will overload and you will subsequently vanish from the musical realms, only to be replaced by a funkier being. The rhythmic placement and lack of frequency is what makes them funky. These are all to be played with a single bass drum only. Master the single bass drum first. By going straight to a double bass pedal you will never develop your full potential in your lead bass drum foot. Believe me, there's a lot than can be done with a single bass drum but you have to push yourself to the limit. I also feel that a lot of these patterns sound funkier on one bass drum. Also, you have full use of your hi-hat foot with a single bass drum pedal, thus allowing you to create some slick patterns to spice up the funk.
