Crabbing on the Oregon Coast with the Large family at age 12Zoro’s Big Brothers Big Sisters Testimonial

By Zoro

I grew up in a family of seven children and was raised by a single mother who had severe financial and physical challenges. In her great love, my mother Maria enrolled her three youngest children in the Big Brother Big Sister program in Grants Pass, Oregon. It was 1972 and I was 10 years old.

A couple by the name of Bill and Beverly Large that could not have children of their own signed on the three of us. With the Larges, there were many magical first-time experiences. They took us to our first football game, on fishing, hunting and camping trips, and to a multitude of enriching cultural activities. It’s hard to believe, but they actually took us out for our very first pizza, Chinese food and a vast array of other cuisine not yet experienced. Those recreational trips formed lifetime memories.

I can remember one particular period when I was going through a hard time at school. When my mother told them about my dilemma, they dropped everything and came to my emotional rescue. Beverly and Bill successfully talked me down from the tree I had climbed to hide from the world. They cheered me up and convinced me that life would get better and that I could make it through that difficult time.

Beverly and Bill faithfully gave us presents for birthdays and Christmas and showered us with love, affection and encouragement. They also attended school events that were important to us and demonstrated love in real and practical ways. We had no father figure in our lives except that of Bill Large; he was an awesome man with the heart of a servant and the spirit of a true teacher. He was kind, patient, understanding and fun. Not only was Beverly fun-loving, intelligent, and nurturing, but she also made us great dinners and treats!

The Large family unselfishly impacted the lives of children who would otherwise have been forgotten and marginalized by society. Without the aid of Beverly, Bill and the Big Brother Big Sister program, we simply would not have had those wonderful opportunities. My mother was always grateful to them and the program for enriching the lives of her youngest children.

It’s amazing that nearly 35 years later, I still have contact with Beverly and Bill Large, who still remain in Oregon. As it turns out, they enjoyed mentoring us so much during the four years we were together that they later adopted five orphan children from New York City whom they raised with great love.

Through their efforts, a great many lives have been positively impacted; demonstrating how seeds sown in love will continue to bear fruit for subsequent generations. None of this would have been possible without the vision of the Big Brother Big Sister program and those who labor for such a wonderful cause. My present life is only what it is because of the investment someone made in my past. There will never be a better investment that one could make than to invest in children!

The Big Brother, Big Sister program provided me with unspeakable joy, hope, love and confidence and richly blessed my life in every conceivable way. Along with mentoring people around the world, I now have two children of my own and love my role as a father more than anything. The program helped to transform a fatherless child into one who would acquire the heart of a true father and enabled me the power to break the vicious cycle and pass on a blessing instead of a curse. It helped launch me into my destiny and gave me the confidence necessary to face the challenges of life with a song in my heart.

Plainly stated, the Big Brother Big Sister program changed my life in significant and deeply profound ways and because of that positive experience, I now mentor, build up and encourage people wherever I go. Were it not for the life-altering relationship that was formed through this program, I would not have attained the success I have enjoyed in the music and motivational speaking industry for the last 25 years.

My deepest and most sincere thanks go to those who have labored for this vitally important organization. You are the unsung heroes who make the world a little better for a few lucky children. I am honored and privileged to be among them.

I am eternally grateful for having had a loving mother who possessed the wisdom to realize our need for such a program and for making the effort necessary to insure our happiness.

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Big Brother Big Sister program and to Beverly and Bill Large for the love you graciously showered on me. I will carry it in my heart into eternity.

With a grateful heart,
Zoro

About Zoro

Zoro has sat on the drummer’s throne commanding some of the most famous stages in the world of rock music. From his position behind an elaborate set-up of signature skins, he’s long been in the spotlight — stationed center stage behind some of the most celebrated artists in music history:  Lenny Kravitz, Bobby Brown, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, The NewEdition, Jody Watley, Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vanessa Paridis, Sean Lennon, and Lisa MariePresley — to drop only a few famous names. He has also worked with noted Christian artists like Barlow Girl, Phil Keaggy, and Lincoln Brewster.

Over more than two decades of creating music, Z has displayed a gifting and a personal charisma too unique to remain in anyone’s shadow. He emerged from behind his drum kit early in his career to establish his own unique celebrity as an often awarded, world acclaimed musician. Throughout his career, he has consistently been voted “#1 R&B Drummer” in the world by premier music industry publications such as Drum!, Modern Drummer, and Rhythm Magazine.

In the midst of the ongoing demands of touring and recording, he also conducts a premier series of national and international drum clinics for major sponsors, and has authored a best-selling book and DVD package, The Commandments of R&B Drumming, which was awarded industry accolades as the ultimate lesson from the master. His latest project, The Commandments of Early Rhythm & Blues Drumming (Alfred Publishing) released in 2008.

The “Minister of Groove” has been the subject of dozens of print, radio and television stories, including appearances on “Enjoying Everyday Life” with Joyce Meyer, “Billy Graham Prime Time Special,” “The 700 Club,” “Focus on the Family” and “The Joni Show.”

Zoro has reached the pinnacle of world success and sums up the secret of that success with one powerful word: GOD

Z breaks all the “rock star” rules and molds. He is fueled internally by a dynamic passion to use his platform of fame to reach everyone within the sound of his voice with the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His is an articulate, self-lived message of motivation and encouragement to reach for higher ground – to live life with purpose, prayer, and a dedication to excellence.

Growing up fatherless as one of seven children in the tough environment of one of Los Angeles’ poorer districts, Z got a glimpse of life’s harsh underpinnings at an early age. Yet he was buoyed by a devoted mother who instilled in him a deep faith and awareness of God’s ability to transform lives and fuel dreams.

Success has offered him the opportunity to become a magnetic role model for young people who are drawn to his hip style and contagious passion. Zoro is a kinetic bundle of human energy and enthusiasm.
His heartbeat is in outreach. That desire to lift children from the ravages of poverty has led to Z’s global work as a spokesperson for Compassion International, a Christian child advocacy ministry and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

As a man who has “walked in the world” — in this case the landmine-filled world of rock ‘n roll music —
Zoro’s personal life map and vision for setting and attaining personal goals with the application of Biblical principles, has found him emerging in recent years as a major “voice for the generations.”  He is a sought after speaker at churches, conferences, conventions, and music festivals. His topics include abstinence until marriage, saying “no” to drugs, parenting, leadership, discovering your purpose, and the development of life skills that will lead to success as God truly defines it.

A serious student of God’s word, Z has the heart of a teacher. He dramatically reaches out from that stage — grabbing the hearts of listeners of all ages with a message filled with warmth and humor. Zoro communicates the relevant facts of life as seen through the adult eyes of a poor kid from the streets of L.A. who achieved his dreams and openly gives the credit to God.

“When I’m really groovin’ — when I’m really feeling it — I’m worshipping God on the drums — my groove is an extension of my thanksgiving to God for my gifts. Any success I have achieved is a result of God’s unmerited favor and applying biblical principals in every area of my life, including utilizing my gift of music.”

Grooving to the beat of a different drum, Zoro has a dynamic, yet humble heart… one that God has entrusted to place on some of the world’s biggest stages.
